Finally, the day to cross the Golden Gate Strait, so named back in the 1800’s before the most photographed bridge in the world existed! This is by far the longest of my snippets, but I felt it was worthy of the extra length. After all, when the bridge was completed in 1937, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge ever built. My parents were married in San Francisco in 1942, and I was born at the Army hospital in the Presidio where my dad was stationed in 1948. He served for 22 years and was part of the Coast Artillery during World War II. Lots of nostalgia on this leg of the journey, not just for me, but also for John (“Mule’), who was born on the Marin side of the bridge (see Day 83, “Back to the Future”).
